Earning the Vest

The path from hopeful volunteer to deployable emergency responder is paved with grueling milestones. Handlers and their prospective four-legged partners must first survive an initial screening day before enduring a strict probationary period. Success demands passing multiple progress checkpoints within the first twelve months, followed by a rigorous Foundation Skills Assessment inside two years.
On active assignments, the human half of the team must interpret subtle canine body language, document every alert location in chaotic environments, manage minor equipment repairs, and coordinate closely with allied rescue agencies.
The Power of the Support Crew

Not every volunteer wants or is ready to handle a working dog on a disaster site, which is where the crucial helper network steps in. Former handlers without an active dog, enthusiastic newcomers preparing for future training, and passionate community members all fill this vital role. Every Tuesday, these supporters gather at the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy.
They lay trails, act as hidden subjects, and run practical drills, ensuring the primary dogs face fresh, unpredictable challenges that keep their detection skills razor-sharp for the next real-world crisis.
